You Don’t Coupon, You Say?

I recently was discussing the art of couponing with a coworker. Mind you, there have been many instances (holiday shopping, food stockpiling, Ulta beauty makeup runs) where my coupons have saved me more than a pretty penny. Most notably, staying in a 4 star Hawaiian hotel for $500 total on my hubby’s milestone birthday back in October thanks to the suckers.

So when she replied, “Yeah, I just don’t think I have time for couponing”, I was in complete and utter shock. Okay, you are essentially saying you don’t have time to save on things you already buy — so you are okay paying marked-up prices? This chick has Louis Vuitton galore! I get that Louis Vuitton is never going on sale, but I still stockpile gift cards for places that sell them — love buying one of their bags for the same price as a Kate Spade. Or better yet, why not put the money aside for luxury because you saved with a coupon buying every day items at Target using their Cartwheel app?

The same argument can be made for working out (and boy, a lot of people make this statement around the holidays that they just don’t have time). Really? You don’t have time to make sure you don’t split the last button on your jeans? Or to justify the extra helping of pie you ate for dessert? Sorry, that argument doesn’t work for me.

But if you are going to skimp on saving money by paying full price for al your stuff, can you drop me off the coupons you don’t plan on using? Several of my friends already do. But don’t hate on my saving money.

Happy Holidays!

4 Tips on Hotel Room Upgrades: How to Score Like a VIP

Image

This past week, I was lucky enough to be upgraded to a junior suite at the Fairmont Hotel in Newport Beach for the price of a regular room. It was a sweet deal. How can you also be lucky enough to get free upgrades and feel like a VIP? Here are 4 tips:

1) Join the loyalty club. Likely it is free and comes with great perks, such as free internet, and exclusive promotional rates for the hotel. Also, there is a greater likelihood that the hotel will give you free upgrades when they see you are a loyalty member.

2) Make friends at the reception desk. Name-dropping (“Dave always puts me on the suite floor”) sometimes does the trick.

3) Request a room on a higher floor. Sometimes busy reservation agents won’t think twice and accidentally may book you for a room you didn’t choose and usually, this is a winning situation for you, the savvy traveler.

4) Talk about the purpose for your visit. Special event? Party? Whatever the case, play it up. The reservationist may want to increase your loyalty to the hotel, and therefore book you to a room you won’t forget. (hence, it worked this time, as I blogged about it!!)

Any other tips you have to get a great VIP room at a great price? I’d love to see them below in the comments section.

How cool is that, I thought?

I just booked a $230 per night hotel for $89 🙂
