Spring Faceoff: Best/Worst Foundation for Your Face

Happy Spring, everyone! Where did winter go? Oh well, on to Easter & Passover.

I had LASIK eye surgery in January (more about that in an upcoming post, I promise). While there were many (rather annoying but necessary) restrictions put in place for the first week or so (e.g., no pools, hot tubs (FOR A MONTH!), no makeup (FOR A WEEK!), I considered it a minor nuisance compared to glasses (which my husband was literally SICK of hearing me complain about since we met).

When I did get back to finally being able to apply my face again for a night on the town, I opened my makeup bag to use the last of my Urban Decay Foundation and (gasp) horrors almighty, the dang thing had spilled ALL OVER MY MAKEUP BAG!! And I hadn’t even traveled anywhere! While I LOVE Urban Decay Eye Palettes and eye shadows in general, this foundation really disappointed! It was thin, I had to use a ton to get anywhere near full coverage, and just never did it for me. (Photo Credit: Ulta.com)

57 tissues, 2 towelettes and 3 makeup wipes later, I gave up and finally tossed the remainder of the foundation in the trash. And thus began my love affair with Christian Dior Airflash Foundation. Yes, it’s expensive (60 bucks), only available at Sephora; and no, I can’t use a coupon a la Ulta.

I spray a little on my face, and boy, does it go a long way! It’s lightweight, but gives me all-nighter, I’m gonna go to Vegas and party til 5 AM, wearability. My skin can breathe! And best of all, it’s a clean container. No mess in my makeup bag means less fears of explosions each time I get ready for a night on the town. (Photo credit: Sephora)

Sorry Urban Decay, but Christian Dior is the winner on this Spring Foundation Faceoff – what are your thoughts? Urban Decay vs. Christian Dior — ready, sound off!

The Airbrushed Expectation

To many outsiders, “old-school people” (including my own mother), makeup is seen as superfluous, unnecessary, a waste of time.

If I had a dollar for all the guys during my pre-married life who told me, “You look so much better without makeup”, I would be living in a mansion next to Heather Dubrow in Newport Beach right now. That is not true!! What guys mean is they want you to have makeup. They just don’t want to be able to see it on you (minimal is key, subtle coverage is everything!) Example: Foundation, neutral eyeshadow, maybe mascara.

I am a fan of transformative makeup. During the week, I’m much too busy to put on a full face of makeup. I don’t like doing “minimalist makeup” either – it’s either SPF, or full-on coverage. I am running around (I work for myself) and much too harried to care. I already have the man of my dreams, I’m not out to impress anyone. My makeup routine during the week pretty much consists of SPF 20 Urban Decay tinted moisturizer.

I want to know why I feel discriminated against shopping in makeup stores for makeup when I love makeup! Maybe I don’t look “pulled together”, but I really know my stuff. Anyone had the experience of going into a department store wearing lounge clothes from Victoria’s Secret and being treated like a poverty-striken homeless bum? I feel a similar way if I go by the department store makeup counter or high-end makeup store. Even Ulta sometimes.

We need to further educate society in two ways:

1) Guys need to understand that those of us who like getting glammed up and ready to go out is a process. Women are not airbrushed unless they are shooting a magazine cover (or selfie-tastic Kim Kardashian). We are not going to look perfectly polished in two seconds. Ever.

2) Makeup stores really need to train their staff to be nice to everyone, regardless of how much makeup they are or are not wearing. Or to take it a few steps further, regardless of what one looks like.  I have been treated much differently (especially in Sephora) when I come in after working out versus on a date night with my husband. This is unacceptable. How the heck would you know that back home I have a huge stockpile of makeup? When employees are rude or flat out ignore me, I don’t feel like buying anything. Furthermore, it just hurts my feelings. I’m sensitive.

I Went to Ulta…And Didn’t Spend a Dime!

I love feeling like I am getting paid to shop in some of my favorite stores, and Ulta is no exception.

I realized that I was low on hair products and didn’t want to shell out lots of $$, so I headed over to Ulta because I had a couple of gift cards and a coupon from RetailMeNot. I also love Ulta because as I shop, they give me $$ off my next purchase just by using their loyalty card.

My first stop was, naturally, the clearance section, where I managed to pick up 4 bottles of shampoo/conditioner (2 of each) for around $2 a pop. Next, I picked up a detangler for $18 and Fekkai leave in conditioner for $26.

I headed to check out, anxiously awaiting my total, which was $56. I had an $8 store credit from previous shopping trips, along with my $3.50 RetailMeNot coupon. I then used one of my birthday gift cards and knocked another $30 off, and then another gift card – and still had $13 left over for my next excursion.

Sale @ Ulta!!

I love Ulta beauty for many reasons including coupons and sales! They always have deals or are sending me coupons and if I forget them, I can look them up on Retailmenot. It’s one of my fave couponing apps on my phone.

And just wanted to share with you that I was able to find Cargo cosmetics for 50% off there! What a steal! Anyone else have good luck with Ulta or deals they want to share??

Covering Up on Cloudy Days!

On days like these where I want to crawl into bed because it’s gloomy outside (I sometimes think I have Seasonal Affective Disorder, which is why I love sunny So-Cal! self-diagnosed), I have to have my extra dose of caffeine to keep me going but also remember to take care of my skin!

That’s right, I am a SPF-hound (and I play SPF police with everyone in my family, making sure they wear sunscreen especially on days like this!!). My fave ones are tinted moisturizers because it gives you an effortless glow and at the same time, decreases your risk of developing melanoma (skin cancer) and keeps your skin from burning.

I especially love this Becca version (@ select Sephora stores) because it feels great on my skin, makes it look like I bothered to put makeup on, and has an SPF of 25. Win win!!

Sunglasses burn, stay away and come again another day, and while you’re at it, take the grey sky along with you.

What’s your fave tinted moisturizer??
